Dominican Republic Archeology Expedition 2009 / 2010 (Return Expedition)
The Museum of the Dominican Man was very impressed with the team’s work and has agreed to allow us to return and focus on paleontological exploration. Fossil vertebrates are rare on the island, even though there has been a lot of archaeological work done emphasizing the prehistory of the Dominican Republic. With few fossils, it is hard for biologists to piece together how the island evolved as a natural habitat, which is what makes it such a beautiful place today. The team recovered skulls and skeletal parts of more than eight individual sloths, and there is more to be found. Walter and Curt may have taken part in opening up a completely new window into the past with the discovery that these important scientific specimens can be recovered in underwater caves.
Honduras Cave and Archeological Expedition 2010/2011 (Return Expedition)
From all corners of the globe, each year thousands of divers flock to the Central American nation of Honduras all bound for the islands of Roatan and Utila. Our destination: Lago De Yojoa. Lake Yojoa is Honduras’ largest lake located in central mainland Honduras three hours from the Caribbean coast and bordered by lush jungle and the Santa Barbara National Park. It is easily one of the most picturesque places in all of Central America. With unsurpassed amounts of fresh water and local fishing, it’s no wonder the families in this area date back to the pre classic period. Our interest in this history and lust for discovery is what brought us here.
Yucatan Cave Expedition 2010/2011 (Return Expedition)
The remarkable thing about the town of Colonia is that it has its own two-lane bowling alley. The lanes are in some disrepair, but you can still hit a strike. The bowling alley is part of the downtown general store and is run by a charming woman named Elsie. Colonia is about 70 kilometers west of Cancun in Mexico’s rough Yucatan Peninsula, an area once the home of a thriving wood products industry that now faces much more difficult economic times. The veneer factory has closed, taking with it the prosperity that Colonia once enjoyed. For ten days in January of 2010, Colonia was the base camp for an elite team of Advanced Diver Magazine explorers.
